Over the last few years, globally, we have seen a new phenomenon coined the eco-wakening. This is due to the increased engagement, curiosity and discussions regarding the state of our planet. More people than ever have become participants in the current and projected environment debate.
In the USA alone, sustainable product searches increased by 450% from 2016-2020. This increase has been seen and reported globally, with 71% covering topics from pharmaceuticals to fashion and food. A dramatic increase in engagement has occurred in emerging markets. The highest spike in engagement occurred in Asia, particularly India, with a 190% increase. Especially as many of these emerging markets are experiencing loss at a more rapid pace than across the globe. A reality that has been raised by the United Nations Development Programme which has cited the severity of the climate crisis in Asia many times. most recently, in December, stating that it poses an “existential threat”.

This increase in engagement also occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, with many people stating in a Boston Consulting Survey that they are more aware of how human activity impacts the environment. Did you find yourself spending more time outside during the pandemic? Daily walks became a staple for many during this time. Providing more time for people to notice the beauty of their surroundings and the nature that contributed to this. As well as more time to think about their impact on their surroundings.

Now, all of this information can cause worry. It is important to note that hearing about these realities raises awareness and contributes to an eco-awakening. Social media has played a decisive role over the last few years. Bringing awareness and amplifying climate-related issues globally. Celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Shailene Woodley have utilised their platform to share important information regarding climate change and environmental protection. As well as activists David Attenborough and Greta Thunberg, who have dedicated their lives to speaking up and advocating for our planet. Being a part of this movement and having conversations with friends, family, and co-workers is essential in driving this change.
From regular people like us, to celebrities with massive followings. People are choosing the planet. That’s pretty cool, don’t you think?
