Spring is just around the corner, and we can feel it!! Can’t you?

We are so excited to welcome warmer weather, sunshine, and the abundance of beautiful produce that will accompany this transition. Within our Seasonal Eating: Winter Edition post, we discussed the importance of reducing your food miles and the benefits of seasonal eating. This information is still essential when the warmer months come around.
You may start to see more colourful produce and tropical-looking fruits. Which may be in season and growing wonderfully in warmer climates, but we are not there just yet for us in the northern hemisphere! Let’s keep trying to enjoy locally grown food, reduce our footprint, and get creative in the kitchen.
We recommend looking at the sources below for a more exact representation of what is available in your region.
Sources we love:
- EUFIC: European Foods in Season
- Foodland Ontario: Foods In Season
- Canadian Food Focus: What’s in Season?
- The Seasonal Food Guide (USA)

If you haven’t been to a farmer’s market in a while, now would be the time to reignite your excitement about them. More produce is making its way into the stands as the seasons progress. Farmer’s markets are a great indicator of what is in season near you. If you are unsure what to make with the items you see at the market, ask a farmer! More often than not, they will be more than happy to share a recipe with you. This is also an excellent way to connect with local farmers and learn more about the growing seasons.
Items that will start to sprout in the spring include asparagus, beetroot, carrots, cucumber, endives, kale and greens, a variety of alliums, apples, and rhubarb! While these items can vary depending on location, you must check what is in season within your exact region! We are excited to see more colourful fruits and vegetables joining us as early as March!
