Recently, we explored the world of upcycling, a fashion trend we’re convinced is here to stay! While it’s becoming easier to purchase pre-upcycled clothing, we wanted to inspire those of you who are thinking, ‘Maybe I could do this myself?’ We also wanted to reach out to those who may have yet to consider upcycling as something they could do. Do you think you need to be more creative or learn how to sew to upcycle? This post shows you that upcycling is accessible to everyone, regardless of your creativity or sewing skills!

No-Sew Up-cycling

An entire category of up-cycling is dedicated to not even having to make a stitch! All you need is some existing garments and a pair of scissors. You may pair denim shorts or a new tank top as the seasons change and the weather warms up. Find a pair of well-loved jeans that might not survive another cold weather season, and give them a trim! For tops, cropping shirts or sleeves are a great place to start! Other alternatives include dying or painting on clothing items. Which can be an excellent alternative for a pesky stain.
Where should I source my materials?

The best place to look is your own closet! We all can admit to having a few or many items sitting in our closets for a later date or event, although we likely still need to find out when this day will come up! Up-cycling is not about buying new things; first, work with what you have! Another great place to source materials is a thrift store. Whether that is just for a great new piece or even some pieces, you can see yourself deconstructing to make something more you! We encourage you to look beyond the regular clothing item; what other textiles do you see in store? A funky quilt could be made into a trendy quilted jacket for a fraction of the cost.
Where to find sewing patterns & tutorials?

Social media is full of pattern templates and how-to videos! With micro sewing, knitting, and crocheting, influencers pop up daily! Search for the item you wish to transform, and you will be met with many options. From beginner to advanced, there is something accessible to everyone!
What if I need lessons?
Many studios across the world offer this service, ranging from in-person to virtual offerings. It is accessible to all experience levels. Another great place to look is within your community. Is there a friend or family member that you know who can sew? Learning from them is a great place to start!
Considering investing in a sewing machine?

A sewing machine can open up a world of possibilities for your up-cycling projects, making them easier and more professional-looking. It can be a worthwhile investment in your sustainable fashion journey! If you are interested in getting your hands on a machine, we recommend looking for something second-hand first; check out the Facebook marketplace or even a local tailor.
Here are some projects we can’t stop thinking about!
