Warmer weather brings new and not-so-fun guests: mosquitoes. Although very important for our ecosystem, mosquitoes are pollinators and food sources for many animals; they can quickly turn a peaceful outing into an annoying and itchy battle against them. Fortunately, there are many ways to keep them away while not causing harm to our environment and allowing them to serve their so-important role in nature. We’ve compiled some tips on how to repel mosquitoes and save yourself from itchy bites. Put them into practice, and let’s enjoy the outdoors!

Eliminate standing water

Eliminating any standing water in your house and around it is a very effective way to get rid of mosquitoes and prevent their breeding. Mosquitoes prefer stagnant water to lay their eggs, so any container holding water can become a breeding ground for them. Ensure all water storage containers are tightly sealed and all plant dishes have drainage.

Use natural oils

Natural fragrances in some plants serve as a natural repellent while leaving your home perfumed and fresh. Essential oils and candles can be great ways to add these fragrances to your house. Here are some of the essences:

  • Lavender
  • Lemongrass
  • Citronella
  • Herbs such as mint, rosemary, and basil
  • Geranium
  • Eucalyptus
  • Catmint
Burn coffee grounds

Who knew coffee grounds were so versatile?! Coffee is an excellent mosquito repellent and a great zero-waste and non-toxic alternative to mosquito repellents. After making coffee, let the grounds dry, put them into a bowl or cup, and burn them with a match. The smoke will repel mosquitoes in a limited range, but it can be a great choice when outdoors.

Use physical barriers

Screens and nets are great barriers to prevent them from getting inside your home. Installing them on your doors, windows, or around your bed (and even more around baby cribs) is a very effective way to protect yourself.

Turn on your fan

Luckily for us, mosquitoes aren’t strong flyers, so they tend to avoid breezes. They are also attracted to our odours and body heat, so turn on your fans and keep the mosquitoes away while staying cool.
