We have all seen natural or reef-safe sunscreens advertised or on your local drugstore’s shelves! With summer and warmer temperatures on the horizon, should you reach for these products when restocking your vanity? In short, yes! It has been estimated that 14,000 tonnes of sunscreen enter waterways. A shocking amount! Some studies suggest that the chemicals in sunscreen can be harmful to aquatic life and, in particular, to coral. While research is still underway, it is essential to look at the ingredients in your sunscreens and choose based on the information you can be provided at the time!

What is mineral sunscreen? How is it different from the rest?
There are two primary types of sunscreen: chemical and physical (mineral) sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens are often easier to absorb, don’t leave a white cast, and operate by being absorbed into the top layer of skin and acting as a barrier to sun rays. While physical or mineral sunscreen sits on top of the skin to reflect UVA/UVB rays, they can be harder to rub in and often leave a white cast. These sunscreens offer the highest level of protection as they create a physical barrier between your skin and the sun.

Wearing sunscreen is a must, but the choice of which type to use is ultimately yours. It’s a highly individual decision, and what works best for you may not be the same for someone else. If you’re planning to spend a lot of time in the water, a physical cream that comes off slowly might be your best bet. Remember, you have the power to make the right choice for your skin and the environment!
