Here are 3 ways to approach sales season this year that are kinder on our planet.
Sale season is upon us! With Black Friday in the United States rapidly approaching and the pressures of mass consumption ramping up as the holidays quickly approach, it is essential to pause and reassess your participation.
The Seasonal Audit

First, as the seasons change, it is always good practice to audit your closet. Are there items you are no longer reaching for, items that have reached the end of their useful life, items you love? Categorize and be sure to either resell, donate, or share the items in good condition with friends and family who no longer receive your love. Good condition means items that are clean, undamaged, and still in fashion.
What do you need?
Next, it’s crucial to list the items you genuinely need. This responsible approach ensures that you’re not just buying for the sake of a sale but for items that will truly benefit you. Are you due for a winter coat or a new pair of boots? Sale season is a good time to get items you need at a discounted rate. However, it is essential to try these items on, especially if you intend to order them online to avoid crowds. Stray away from bracketing, where you purchase multiple items to return some. This leads to increased amounts of shipping and return freight. As well as waste, through packaging and depending on the retailer’s policy, these items may end up in the garbage or liquidation centers.
Take a Break from Social Media

We are bombarded with hauls, advertisements, and pressure to purchase new things daily. It is not expected to buy an entirely new warbroad every season. Take an intentional pause from social media during this time. It is so easy to buy now, with ads linked to posts that direct you to purchase sites for retailers worldwide.
